The necessity for MHAT arose from the particularly critical challenge faced by primary care providers (PCPs); the rising demand for mental health services coupled with a scarcity of specialized psychiatric resources. With over 35% of Canadians reporting unmet mental health needs, and over 500,000 employed Canadians missing work each week due to poor mental health, the need for an efficient, accurate tool was pressing. MHAT has addressed this gap by providing PCPs and their referred specialists with a comprehensive, algorithm-driven approach to identify the mental health conditions most likely affecting each patient, thereby streamlining the pathway to effective treatment.
